The Estrela XC Challenge 2018 is a paragliding cross country challenge based out of Serra de Estrela (Manteigas) open to all pilots, with prize money awards for the best flights.

Terms and Conditions for 2018


Promoters and Objectives

Clube Vertical, supported by the Mayory of Manteigas, launches and supports the Estrela XC Challenge, a paragliding cross country challenge which aims at promoting and increasing the free flight potential of the Serra de Estrela (Manteigas) region.

Several prize money awards will be given to the pilots who make the best flights across different wing categories (see Standings).



The Estrela XC Challenge will run from the 15th of February to the 15th of November, 2017.

The award ceremony will take place at the beginning of December 2017 (date and venue to be announced).


Participation Conditions

The Estrela XC Challenge is open to all licenced pilots covered by a valid and suitable insurance policy.

Every pilot who participates in the Estrela XC Challenge:

- is responsible for the decision to fly, for his/her flights and for the assessment of the aerological and orographic conditions;

- should be available to attend the award ceremony and press requests;

- must register at Clube Vertical's website:


Proof of Flights

Every flight must be claimed on XContest:

Only flights from the municipality of Manteigas are valid;

The type of flight and corresponding score are validated and awarded by XContest (see rules here:;

Flights made in a competition context are not valid.


Wing Categories

There are four wing categories:

Standard (homologation EN A or B);

Sport (homologation EN C);

Expert (homologation EN D or CCC);

Tandem (homologation EN A, B or C).



The standings are obtained based on XContest's scoring (;

There will be two types of standings: i) ongoing and ii) season:

     i) Ongoing Standings

     Within each wing category, each pilot that beats the best current XContest score receives a retrieval voucher of up to 100Km or a takeoff lift card.

     Initial XContest scores:

Standard category: 100pts;

Sport category: 150pts;

Expert category: 200pts 210.84pts by José Rebelo;

Tandem category: 100pts.

     Note: in the sport category, for example, 150pts may correspond to a distance of 150km between a start-point and end-point with up to three turn-points, or a FAI triangle of approximately 150/1.4=107km or a flat triangle of 150/1.2=125km.

     These prizes are noncumulative, except one mono category with one tandem category.

     ii) Season Standings

ii.1) Best flight in each wing category. Criterion: biggest XContest score

Standard category: 250€ in retrivals;

Sport category: 250€ in retrivals;

Expert category: 250€ in retrivals;

Tandem category: 250€ in retrivals.


These prizes are noncumulative, except except one mono category with one tandem category..

ii.2) Notable achievements. Criterion: longest free distance between the two farthest points (without intermediate turn points)

300km achievement: 400€ in prize money;

350km achievement: 600€ in prize money;

400km achievement: 900€ in prize money.

Only one of these prizes will be awarded.

ii.3) European FAI record (current record: 429 km): 1500€ in prize money.

     The prizes of the season standings are noncumulative between them.
